Charles Herrick was born in Chestertown, Maryland, and studied at the University of Maryland. He was a journalist and worked for the Baltimore Sun before becoming a full-time writer in his thirties. His first novel, The Light in the Forest, appeared in 1932. In the 1940s he wrote The Arctic Grail series of books about a fictional British research station in Alaska
His other novels included The Honey-Tree, Quest for the South Pole, The River of Time, and others. He also published a number of nonfiction books on a wide range of subjects including Ulysses S. Grant's Civil War memoirs and a biography of Thomas Jefferson.
